When to visit the emergency room

It isn’t always super obvious if you should go to the hospital or not when you have an injury or symptom. Something may seem small and insignificant, but could actually turn out to be something very dangerous. Some people will downplay their big symptoms and not go to the emergency room even when they need to. 

Especially with COVID-19, many people are avoiding the emergency room to prevent the spread of illness, but not going when you have symptoms of a serious medical condition or accident injury can make it much, much worse. A lot of illnesses or injuries require immediate attention in order to yield good results for recovery. 

If you aren’t sure what types of symptoms require a visit to the emergency room, here are some tips.

Signs you should go to the emergency room

  • If you are experiencing any type of shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, it is best to go to the emergency room. You could be experiencing a number of things that could ultimately result in you not being able to breathe. Whether it is due to an allergic reaction, asthma or something else, the ER is the best way to determine what is happening.
  • Chest pain is a huge indicator that you should head to the emergency room. Sometimes you can have what feels like chest pain, but it is actually something that isn’t serious. If you have a sudden feeling of pressure, squeezing, tightness or crushing under the breastbone, that is when you should head to the ER. Especially if this is accompanied by pain spreading to the jaw, nausea, dizziness or confusion. 
  • Sudden numbness or weakness in your face, arm, leg or one side of your body could indicate a severe problem. If this is joined by confusion or trouble seeing, you will definitely want to head to the ER right away. 
  • Abdominal pain, especially when it is localized on the right side of your abdomen is definitely a reason to head to the emergency room.   • If you suffer a severe head injury, it is always best practice to head to the emergency room. Though you may feel fine and have no symptoms, signs of a concussion can sometimes show up later on. You want to be sure there is no damage, so going just to be safe is the best option.
